Why Is My Baby Waking So Frequently Overnight?

If your baby is waking every 1-2 hours overnight (or even more frequently if you're one of the lucky ones), you’re not alone. And no, it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. What your doing works until it stops working for you.

Frequent night waking is one of the most common reasons parents seek baby sleep help from me. But the key to improving it is understanding why it’s happening.

Common reasons your baby is waking frequently

  • Sleep associations

If your baby relies on feeding, rocking, or being held to fall asleep, they may need that same support each time they wake between sleep cycles. Consolidating sleep cycles means recreating the environment without needing as much of your assistance.

  • Short sleep cycles

Babies naturally cycle through light and deep sleep more often than adults. Without the ability to resettle, this can lead to frequent waking.

  • Overtiredness

When babies are awake too long between naps or bedtime, their bodies produce more cortisol and their hormones struggle to down-regulate, making it harder to stay asleep and transitions between sleep cycles bumpier.

  • Daytime sleep imbalance

Too much or too little daytime sleep can impact overnight sleep, leading to more frequent waking.

  • Developmental changes

Sleep regressions, milestones, and growth spurts can all temporarily disrupt sleep patterns as the brain is in overdrive processing, mastering and developing through these skills. Sleep is on the backburner.

What you can do

  • Look at your baby’s awake windows

  • Create a consistent (but flexible) bedtime routine

  • Gently support your baby to fall asleep in a way that’s sustainable overnight (with less assistance from you over time)

  • Focus on overall sleep patterns, not just nights. Days affect nights and vice versa.

When to get support

If your baby has been waking frequently for weeks or months, it may be time for personalised support. If you're feeling exhausted, frustrated, irritable and close to burnout, it means the sleep deprivation is getting ontop of you. Let's start enjoying parenting again and reduce the anxiety around sleep.

Understanding your baby’s sleep holistically can make a huge difference, and help you move toward longer, more restful stretches. It's more than just routine, it's time to look at all the pieces. Sleep is multi-faceted.
