Why Does My Baby Only Sleep When Held?

If your baby only sleeps on you… first of all, you’re not doing anything wrong, and you're definitely not alone. I have so many parents contact me wanting some time to themselves but find they're constantly under a sleeping child. 💛

But if you’re stuck holding them for every nap or overnight wake, it can quickly become exhausting, leading to burnout, increased frustration and irritability, and not enjoying your motherhood journey.

Here’s what’s going on:

1. It’s what they know

Babies learn to fall asleep the way they’re supported. If they’re always rocked or held, that becomes their normal. This is when we can look at changing their 'normal' to something more sustainable for you.

2. They’re seeking comfort

Contact = warmth, heartbeat, safety. Completely natural. But can be making you feel touched out.

3. They haven’t learned to transition sleep cycles independently

This is why they wake the second you put them down. Transfers into the cot will become harder as they become older. I also wouldn't expect them to settle one way, then resettle a different way.

The good news? You don’t have to jump straight to cry-it-out (which I don't recommend anyway).

You can gently teach your baby to:

✔️ Fall asleep in their own sleep space

✔️ Stay asleep longer

✔️ Settle without being fully held

This is where the right personalised sleep plan and support makes all the difference.

✨ If you’re ready to stop being nap-trapped, I can help.

You deserve a break, and your baby can still feel supported.
