Why Is My Baby Waking Before 6am, and How to Fix It

Early rising is one of the most frustrating sleep challenges for parents.
If your baby is consistently waking before 6am, it can feel like the day starts before you’ve had any real rest.
The good news? Early waking is common — and often fixable once you understand the cause.

Why babies wake early
Overtiredness at bedtime
A too-late bedtime can actually lead to earlier waking, not a sleep-in. This is the opposite effect of what most parents are aiming for.
Too much daytime sleep
If your baby is getting more sleep than they need during the day, they may be ready to start the day early. A nap too early or too long in the morning can be seen as another night block. Evenly distribute day sleep to give more pressure at night.
Light exposure
Early morning light signals to your baby’s body clock that it’s time to wake through elevation in cortisol levels, waking your baby naturally.
Habitual waking
If early waking has been happening for a while, your baby’s body clock may have adjusted to it. How we respond to this wake matters here where the sleep pressure is so low.
Hunger
In some cases, early waking can be linked to genuine hunger, especially in younger babies. However, continuing to offer a feed straight upon wake can motivate the rise as feeding produces hormones and a calorie surge.

How to reduce early waking
Adjust bedtime earlier (this often helps more than later!)
Review daytime nap lengths and timing
Keep the room dark in the early morning
Respond consistently to early wakes
A realistic expectation
For many babies, a biologically normal wake time is between 6–7am.
If your baby is waking well before this, small changes can make a big difference over time.
